Self-Help Gurus: Growing Up in a Dysfunctional Family Makes You a Target for Their BS
Sep 03, 2024In the latest episode of “You're Not Crazy,” I dive into my loathing of self-help gurus like Tony Robbins. These so-called empowerment experts often exploit the same abusive patterns seen in toxic family dynamics. I reveal how a dysfunctional upbringing can distort our sense of self and intuition, making us prime targets for re-traumatization by these charismatic and convincing figures.
The allure of self-help gurus can be incredibly powerful. They often present themselves as having all the answers, promising life-changing results. However, this charismatic allure can be be especially harmful and convincing for those of us who have grown up in dysfunctional family environments. I compare the behavior of these gurus to cult-like behaviors, noting how they can manipulate their followers in ways that disregard personal trauma, individual needs, and the importance of autonomy to make our own decisions.
One of the most profound impacts of growing up in a dysfunctional family is the loss of trust in one's own intuition. Children raised by parents with borderline or narcissistic personality disorders often learn to suppress their own thoughts and feelings to avoid conflict. This can leave them vulnerable to manipulative figures in adulthood, including self-help gurus who claim to have all the answers.
The cycle of abuse that occurs in dysfunctional families is eerily similar to the manipulative tactics used by some self-help gurus. I discuss how the same toxic, abusive, and dysfunctional cycles seen in abusive romantic relationships and cults are often present in the self-help industry. These figures prey on individuals who are susceptible to placing other’s thoughts and desires above their own by offering them the promise of false hope and solutions that can lead to dependence on the guru and further harm.
One of the most damaging aspects of these self-help gurus is their tendency to provide harmful advice that disregards personal trauma. I talk about how some of these figures, including Tony Robbins, offer one-size-fits-all solutions that can be re-traumatizing for individuals with traumatic backgrounds. I also stress the importance of seeking personalized, trauma-informed care rather than relying on advice from so-called experts implying they have a magical solution to all of your problems.
For those who have grown up in dysfunctional family environments, it is crucial to be cautious of individuals who claim to have all the answers. And, it’s important to be skeptical of anyone who implies they have a quick fix for a complicated problem. I encourage everyone to take all these self-help experts on social media and otherwise with a grain of salt. No one deserves to be put on a pedestal.
This episode of “You're Not Crazy” is a powerful exploration of the hidden dangers of self-help gurus and the impact of a dysfunctional upbringing.
